Kathmandu, Recently, there has been a major surge in the interest of entrepreneurship and business in the youth of Nepal. Sectors like tourism, production, and development are booming and a lot youth participation can be seen in recent start-ups or the companies that have been recently established.
One of the major causes for this is the spreading of awareness through social media platforms. Due to the influence of business pitching events like Shark Tanks, youths are getting more and more involved in business activities which is good for both the nation and individuals. Briefly speaking, Shark Tank is one of the business idea-pitching platforms where entrepreneurs ask for a sum of money in exchange for a portion of their company. This type of platform are getting more interest in social media like Instagram, Facebook, X, etc. Hence, due to this increased interest in Nepal, now we can observe a lot of youths participating in such events to present their business ideas and their innovation.
I also recently participated in one of those shark tanks organized by Budhanilkantha School on 6th September 2024. The event clearly showed some extremely satisfactory results. More than 15 schools were participating from within Kathmandu Valley. Among them were some of the prestigious names like Rato Bangala and Budhanilkantha School. We could see many different and unique business ideas presented by some of the brightest youth minds around the nation. One of those ideas I loved most was of a company named Swasthani. It was an application-based business that provided the list of materials required for several religious ceremonies like Bratabandha, Marriage, etc. It also provided clear instructions on how to conduct those rituals and also managed a webshop to sell and supply all the required materials. I absolutely loved this business idea, simply because it was unique. I myself, along with my teammates Piyush Joshi and Hardik Uprety, presented our business idea “DHAR”. It is a fashion and a bag-producing company that focuses on producing bags and handbags. It promotes the use of agricultural products like hemp, jute and alau in order to produce some high quality and sustainable. Such business ideas were very common but unique. Everyone had their own point of view and uniqueness. Moreover, I could also see many other business ideas related to social entrepreneurship, health, culture, fashion, technology and so on. This shows that youths today are getting more and more innovative with every passing day. Also, they are now able to see all those opportunities “hidden” within Nepal.
Such events have now been garnering a ton of interest and have been conducted in a lot of schools all around Nepal. Moreover, those events have highly succeeded in helping the youngsters realize their passion and be frank with their innovation. Now with the youth focusing on improving the economic standards of Nepal and many top educational institutions facilitating them, it is highly likely that more and more innovative ideas may fall into light in the near future. To support this, I believe that the educational institutions of Nepal up to university levels should regularly hold Shark Tanks in order to promote innovation and let the youths speak their minds about their business ideas. The initiatives taken by Budhanilkantha School and other schools must be made fruitful by expanding those types of events in order to create a better and an econiomically strong Nepal.
